Séverin Guelpa, geboren 1974, ist eine der wichtigsten Stimmen der zeitgenössischen

Schweizer Kunst. Im Zentrum steht für ihn oft das Material selbst, als symbolisches Trägermedium, als Gedächtnis und Gesprächspartner. Seine Arbeiten entstehen im Austausch mit Gestein, Holz, Beton und Metall. Oft geht es um Reibung, manchmal auch um Konfrontation. In einer Zeit, in der vieles in Polarisierungen zerfällt, gelingt es Guelpa, eine Form der Dringlichkeit zu entfalten, die weder vorwurfsvoll noch oberflächlich ist, sondern aufgrund ihrer Präsenz Raum in Anspruch nimmt.

Séverin Guelpa, born in 1974, is one of the key voices in contemporary Swiss art.

For him, the central factor is often the material itself – as a symbolic carrier medium,

as memory and as a conversation partner. His works are created in dialogue with stone,

wood, concrete and metal. They are frequently about friction, and sometimes also about

confrontation. At a time when so much is descending into polarisation, Guelpa succeeds

in developing a form of urgency that is neither accusatory nor superficial, but that takes

up space, due to its sheer presence.
